Brass is one of the heaviest common engineering metals — around 8,300–8,530 kg/m³, roughly 8% denser than steel. Because brass is also expensive per kilogram, small dimensional differences translate into real money: an accurate weight estimate is the first step of every serious quote.
This calculator includes the alloys you actually buy: free-cutting C36000 (8,500 kg/m³) — the standard for machined parts, cartridge brass C26000 (8,530 kg/m³), yellow brass C27400, naval brass C46400, and aluminum brass C68700.
Brass is most often sold as round and hexagonal bar for machining. A Ø30 mm free-cutting brass bar weighs about 6.0 kg per meter — worth knowing before you order a 3-meter length.

Yes — brass alloys range from 8,330 to 8,530 kg/m³, about 6–9% heavier than steel at 7,850 kg/m³. The same part machined from brass instead of steel weighs noticeably more.
What is the density of free-cutting brass?
C36000 free-cutting brass — the most common machining brass — has a density of about 8,500 kg/m³. Its lead content (≈3%) is what makes it machine so freely.
