Stainless steel is denser than carbon steel — austenitic grades like 304 and 316 weigh about 8,000 kg/m³, roughly 2% more than structural steel. On a large sheet order that difference alone can add tens of kilograms, so using the correct grade density matters for accurate quotes and transport planning.

What does a stainless steel sheet weigh?
A 304 stainless sheet weighs 8.0 kg per square meter per millimeter of thickness. A standard 2000×1000×1.5 mm sheet therefore weighs about 24 kg; the same sheet in 3 mm weighs about 48 kg.
Is stainless steel heavier than mild steel?
Slightly — austenitic stainless grades (304, 316) are about 8,000 kg/m³ versus 7,850 kg/m³ for mild steel, roughly 2% heavier. Ferritic grades like 430 are actually lighter at about 7,700 kg/m³.
Do 304 and 316 stainless weigh the same?
For practical purposes yes — both are typically quoted at 8,000 kg/m³. The molybdenum in 316 changes corrosion resistance and price, but not meaningfully the density.
